In line with these findings, Reeves and Nass (1996) developed the media equation theory which asserts that, as human-machine interaction is inherently natural and social, the rules of human-human interaction also apply to human-machine interactions. This behavior was not related to actual game performance, showing the dissociation between normative, rational interaction with the computer and the specific socioemotional responses of the human user. Subjects in Scheibe and Erwin’s study used personal pronouns (“you” or “him/her”) for computers and were very emotionally involved when playing a simple strategic game with a computer. Monika Knopf, in Emotions, Technology, and Health, 2016 Affect in Human-Robot InteractionĮarly research in human-robot interaction ( HRI) showed that humans tend to “personify” computers ( Scheibe & Erwin, 1979 ). What Is Emotional About Emotional Robotics? Since they may have other similarities with the pronouns they are presented under this general heading also. Sequential pronouns refer to the subject of a matrix clause, which may be the same or different in a subordinated clause. The same is true for logophoric pronouns, which refer to the speaker in a reported speech situation. They are coreferent with nouns but not interchangeable with them. Reflexives are quite different from all the others by the fact that they neither modify nor substitute. Pronouns may also substitute the whole possessive noun phrase. In the genitive case the possessive pronouns mark the possessor, with agreement to the possessor or the possessed item, or both.

There are different forms for degrees of emphasis. Subject pronouns in particular may also be fused with aspect and mode markers, which are verbal categories.

In noun phrases and clauses they may be marked for case distinctions. There are also pronominally used adverbs and nouns. Non-personal pronouns are demonstratives, articles, indefinite, negative, interrogative, and relative forms. Some are used for honorifics or have other special uses. In personal pronouns sets are distinguished by person, number, and gender. Locatives, interrogatives, relatives, indefinite, and negative forms are included among the pronouns. In English, the personal pronouns substitute, the articles modify, and the demonstratives do both. Other pronouns modify nouns some have the capability of doing both. In most contexts the pronoun is coreferent to and interchangeable with the noun it refers to. Noun referents can be substituted by personal pronouns.
